The Ketogenic Diet: Rewiring the Factory
- Cutting carbohydrates very low forces a fundamental shift, your body switches from running on sugar to running almost entirely on fat
- Your body responds by building more fat-burning machinery, like adding extra lanes to a motorway
- Your liver converts fat into an alternative fuel called ketones, which can power your brain and organs when sugar is scarce
- With insulin kept consistently low, your fat cells stay "unlocked" around the clock, fat burning continues even at rest

- Unlike normal fat burning, brown fat has a different mechanism: instead of converting fat into usable energy, it burns fat and releases the energy directly as heat
- Cold exposure triggers a surge of noradrenaline, a signal that tells your energy centres to start burning fat at high speed
- Over time, repeated cold exposure causes something remarkable: white fat cells begin to behave more like brown fat, increasing your overall calorie-burning capacity
- An added benefit: regular cold exposure improves how well your body responds to insulin over time
